Profile

Edward Mackenzie works mainly with 'found' objects - old and new manufactured objects, to create unique sculptural art.  His work has a strong design element with references to humor, allegory, or history. Chosen material often evolves into a series of artwork, for example: PIANOWORKS using piano parts; OARACLE using sculling oars; PYROTECHNICAL using matches and matchboxes.

The Artist was born in Los Angeles in 1937, raised in Connecticut, attended Ogunquit (summer) School of Painting, and Parsons School of Design NYC.  He graduated from Cooper Union School of Art in 1960 and he worked as a freelance Illustrator and Designer, and for Alexei Brodovitch in New York.

Awarded a Fulbright Scholarship 1966-68, Edward Mackenzie studied at the Royal College of Art in London.  As a part-time Art Lecturer in England, he continued freelance work for a variety of clients including Milton Keynes Corporation, Observer Magazine, Penguin Books, Polydor Records, and Jaeger in Paris.

Mackenzie moved with his wife and young family to New Zealand in 1982.  Awarded a Creative New Zealand Arts Council Grant in 1989, he established a reputation for his Assemblage work and exhibited extensively in that country.

In 2002, Edward settled in Richmond Maine, converting an old Store into a Studio and Art Gallery to create and exhibit 3D Assemblage Art.
